Editorial Policy
By Rebecca Torres, RDReviewed 2026-06-01
Home Storage Guide publishes only food-storage guidance that is cited to tier-1 sources — USDA, FDA, CDC, and university extensions — and reviewed by a registered dietitian before publication.
Home Storage Guide publishes food-storage and food-safety guidance. Because the stakes are your health, our editorial rules are strict.
What we will and will not publish
We publish shelf-life tables, storage methods, and pantry systems backed by tier-1 sources: USDA (including FSIS and the FoodKeeper App), FDA, CDC, and university extensions. We do not publish personal "I kept it for a month and it was fine" advice as safety guidance, and we never present a best-by date as an expiration date.
Sources first
Every numeric claim — a duration, a temperature, a spoilage test — is tied to a source. Each page ends with a Sources section listing the authorities behind it, and the most safety-critical pages link the relevant source inline. If a number cannot be sourced, it is removed.
Review process
- Every page names its author and reviewer, with a review date.
- Safety-tier topics — eggs, poultry, ground meat, seafood, cooked rice, low-acid canned foods, canning, and food-safety temperature guides — require sign-off by Rebecca Torres, RD, our credentialed reviewer.
- All pages are re-reviewed on a schedule: every 6 months for safety-tier content, every 12 months for everything else.
Independence from advertisers
Affiliate and advertising relationships never change what we recommend or how we test. Affiliate links are labeled, use rel="sponsored", and are disclosed in plain text. If we cannot say something honestly and still keep the revenue, we say it honestly.
Corrections
When we get something wrong, we fix it fast and publicly. See our corrections policy.
